Bleed, trim and safe zone
Three lines matter on every print file. The bleed line is the outer edge of the file; backgrounds run to it. The trim line is where the card is cut. The safe zone sits 0.125 in inside the trim; text and logos stay inside it. Printers cut stacks of hundreds of sheets, and the blade drifts by up to 1/16 in, so these margins are what keep a white sliver off your card.
Colour
Design in RGB if you like, but check the CMYK conversion of your brand colours before printing: pure RGB blue (#0000FF) prints as a dull purple-blue, neon greens turn olive. Every colour page in ColorsLovers lists CMYK values; for critical colours order one sample first.
Cards that already have the right bleed
Every template is set up with bleed and safe zone; you only replace the text and logo.
Print spec questions
What is bleed?
Extra artwork (0.125 in / 3 mm) beyond the trim line so that tiny cutting shifts never leave a white edge. Backgrounds and photos must extend into it; text must not.
What is the safe zone?
The area at least 0.125 in (3 mm) inside the trim line. Anything important, text, logos, QR codes, stays inside it.
Which resolution do I need?
300 dpi at the final printed size. A US business card with bleed is 1125 × 675 px at 300 dpi.
RGB or CMYK?
Printers print CMYK. Bright RGB blues, greens and oranges shift darker; check the colour in ColorsLovers (CMYK values are listed) and order a sample when the colour matters.
Does the template add bleed for me?
The design editor shows the bleed and safe lines on every template; when you upload a full-bleed image, size it to the dimensions with bleed shown here.
